Philips just came out with a display that uses WOWvx technology to display 3D images on screen without the use of special viewing glasses.
The technology behind this 3D imaging uses image-processing software and tiny lens atop LCD screens to project slightly different image. Data is stored in the form of image plus depth. The depth-map indicates the distance between each pixel and the viewer. When combined with the 2D image and human brain/perception, the images that appear on the screen creates a 3D sensation.
This 3D technology is still very expensive and only a few displays have been sold to movie theaters and shopping malls. In addition, this 3D illusion requires specially-created content which also requires producers willing to create this type of content.
Give and take a few more years, this 3D technology will become more affordable and prevalent. Everyone will have one of these displays at home and we’ll be watching everything in 3D, including TV shows, sport games, video games, and movies.
